This year marks the 20th anniversary Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools takes time to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our theme for this year is "Leaving a Legacy - Realizing the Dream." Students are asked to explore the meaning and significance of legacies and how the impact on realizing Dr. King's dream of equality for all people.

As you work with your students to address this topic, please be sure they are able to articulate strong connections between what a legacy is, what it means to leave a legacy, and how leaving a legacy could realize Dr. King's dream. It is important students move beyond retelling the dream to exploring how the dream can truly be realized.

We've added two new elements this year. For the first time, students will be able to submit writing entries in either English or Spanish! We are also integrating our music, dance, and theater arts students by asking for submissions to be considered for an opportunity to perform live during our annual awards ceremony to take place on Thursday, January 16, 2014. Your continued support of this contest is greatly appreciated.
